Day 5: Redwood Forest

We started off the day with a short drive south to visit a redwood tree that you can actually drive through. Somehow, the tree sustained some damage during a storm back in the 70's, and a hole was carved out of the tree. The tree is still alive.

Later on we went to the Stout redwood grove. There was a short hike along a paved path with massive redwoods everywhere. These giants are so imposing and as the wind picks up a little you can hear them creaking and bending. Clara enjoyed walking around on her own and saying hi to the other visitors.

These last two pictures are of the roots of an overturned tree. I'm not sure what possessed me to want to climb up and into the roots, but Tom snapped a picture so I thought I would share it :)

After the Redwood Forest, we drove to Eugene, OR and spent the night. Eugene is the home of the University of Oregon. We stayed close to campus and ate at one of the local pizza joints for dinner.
