Day 1 - Travel to Portland

Clara and I left Houston and took two flights to arrive in Portland and meet up with Tom (who flew in from Chicago). We drove through the Columbia River Gorge to get to our campsite at Ainsworth State Park.

The park was really pretty. It was just off the highway, but there were so many trees, ferns and moss covered paths that we felt removed enough from civilization. I was happy to see clean bathrooms and running water...this was my kind of camping!

Tom got our tent set up, along with Clara's pack and play and our air mattress (we weren't exactly roughing it!).

We decided to take a drive down a scenic highway which had beautiful views of waterfalls every few miles. We found the Multnomah Falls lodge and ate dinner there. After visiting with some people there, we decided to come back the next day and do a hike around this area.

After dinner, it was time for Clara to go to bed so we headed back to our camp. We were so excited about this vacation, and had been for a long time, but there were lingering doubts as to Clara's ability to sleep well in a tent. With some trepidation, we got her ready for bed, bundled her up in a brown bear full body suit and went through her normal routine. She was so exhausted from our traveling, she fell asleep quickly and without much fight. Yea!!!

Tom got a nice campfire going for us and we waited for my suitcase to arrive. (One of my suitcases had got lost and didn't make the connecting flight) It came around 10:00 at night and we went to sleep. Clara didn't wake up with us coming in and out of the tent, zipping and unzipping, and shifting around in our sleeping bags. In fact, she slept through the whole night!!
